Curriculum

Our schools, whilst delivering the statutory content of the National Curriculum, plan a thematic approach to learning. The topics change regularly to excite and inspire children to nurture a passion for learning. The curriculum is taught with the consideration of the needs of all learners. A knowledge and skills-based approach is followed to ensure that the children make progress with their learning as they move through the Federation.

Our pedagogy - defined simply as the method, and practice, of teaching, is based on Rosenshine's Principles. This consists largely of 10 key elements;

  • Begin a lesson with a short review of previous learning
  • Present new material in small steps with pupil practice
  • Ask a large number of effective questions and
    check the responses of all pupils
  • Provide models and examples
  • Guide pupils' practice
  • Check for pupil understanding
  • Obtain a high success rate
  • Provide scaffolding and support for difficult tasks
  • Encourage and monitor independent practice
  • Engage pupils in weekly and monthly review

We have specialist teachers who teach all pupils music and sports.

As part of the Education Act, RE is taught to all pupils except those withdrawn at the request of their parents. RE will be taught in accordance with The Pan-Berkshire Agreed Syllabus.

As part of our PSHE and SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural) curriculum, opportunities and experiences are planned for and promoted across the entire federation curriculum and all aspects of school life. This contributes to our determination in creating an inclusive and positive learning community, Pastoral care plays a significant role in supporting children in developing an understanding of right and wrong. As part of our daily assemblies, pupils have the opportunity to reflect on stories with morals and how these relate to their behaviour in school and as part of the wider community.
